Garth Mountain

Main Village The Garth Information Further About Links

Background Information

Garth Mountain is the first mountain you encounter on your way from the South Wales coast going North. It lies in the Taff Vale with the village of Pentyrch on one side.

The Garth has a number of tumuli on its top. These date from the early to middle bronze age, around 2000 BC. They are burial sites.

A  book was written about "Ffynnon Garw" which was made into a film 'The Englishman who went up a hill and came down a mountain'. The location of Ffynnon Garw rather implies it is The Garth. This story is a good one but fictional.
To set the record straight the Pentyrch History Society and Community Council have put up an information notice near the summit.

Click on the DVD above to see the details of the film starring Hugh Grant which you can buy from Amazon. Click below for the book.

Views of and from the Garth

An excellent book on the natural history of the Garth is The Garth Countryside by Mary E Gillham.
